11/30/2010

Hallo there!
Okay, so today was my first day of physical therapy. Thankfully it wasn't as painful as I expected it to be. At the beginning of the session I was at 100 degrees of motion in my knee with it being about 20 degrees from straight, and by the end I was about 10 degrees from straight. Normal knees have about 130 to 140 degrees of motions. Before the surgery they want me to have 120 degrees of movement and it would be best if i could straighten my leg. Having the most motion as possible is important before the surgery because the more range of motion I have going in to surgery the more I will have coming out/the better my knee will be healing. The physical therapist gave me a few exercises to do at home and I will go back in on Thursday.

As of now, my surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday, only a week from today!! Oh boy. What I know of the surgery is that they are going to be grafting cells on to my acl. They can take the cells from a few places, the ligament over my knee cap, my hamstring, or from cadaver. (Dead persons ligament cells? hmm, don't know about that one. No offense) Also from what I've heard I may not be put under anesthesia. That's an intimidating thought! But, even considering that I'm not too worried about the surgery. I'm most dreading the IV. That's just sad......ha. Anyway, Friday I get to go talk to the doctor and figure all of this stuff out.

This past weekend I went up to Aspen to watch the women's world cup slalom. And believe it or not I was not the only one there on crutches.

Well that's about all I got for now. Thanks for reading, hasta luego!

First Post!!!!

Alright, first post! I made this blog a couple days ago and was going to use it for a skiing journal but I just haven't had time to post on it. But since a few things happened it is going to have a little bit of a different purpose for a while. Still, lets start out with a little skiing...
This year has had a rough start. I haven't been skiing the greatest. So far I have been working on moving my turn up the hill and pressuring in the fall line. Tough stuff! Also I found out that my boots a re a little big and we have been working on the canting of my boots for a while. Though I have still had those good days and awesome runs.

As for recently, yesterday I hurt my self. What did I do? Well, I screwed up my knee. Right now it is fairly swollen and I can't straighten it or bend it and can't put any pressure on it. I went to the doctor and have some tests done, x-rays, and an MRI. What that all concluded to was that I has significant bone contusions, a strained/partially torn mcl, and a torn acl. My season is over :(

As for fixing it, it is a pretty lengthy process. I have to do therapy for two weeks to get my range of motion back before I get the reconstruction surgery. After I get the surgery I will have a long time of recovery therapy. After 3 months of therapy I will be able to run again. (though I would say not such a good idea because of the high impact so maybe biking or swimming) then after 6 months of therapy after the surgery I will be fully recovered. That doesn't necessarily mean I can do everything I used to. Then after all is said and done I will be in a knee brace for at least a year.
I am going to use this blog as a kinda of progress tracker, I mean why not right? I am going to (attempt to) keep posting on here so I can keep looking forward and not forget my skiing goals. And if you are reading this, thank you! I know it's probably not the most exciting thing in the world . :)
